Without a safety net a family can be put into dire straits. What would you do if you had no savings, and no family support when your car breaks down and you can’t get to work? You are left to choose between paying your rent or getting your car fixed, so you can go to work and keep your job. Imagine how scary, and even detrimental it would be to the health and well-being of your family.
Since the pandemic, the need for assistance has become critical with many losing their jobs and small businesses. Today, our mission has become more vital in helping the numerous families who are only a paycheck away from losing their livelihood and the safety of their families. According to LendingClub Bank nearly two-thirds of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck across all income brackets(1). "Of consumers earning between $50,000 to $100,000 annually, 65% lived paycheck to paycheck as of July 2023, compared to 63% a year ago. Among high-income consumers, 13% struggle to pay monthly bills, up sharply from 8.8% in July 2022, according to the survey. Some 34% of low-income consumers struggle to pay bills, an increase from 31% a year ago."
With ever increasing inflation, the highest level of consumer debt in history with APR's north of 20%, and the devaluing of the US dollar, many families are finding themselves in terrible circumstances they never would have anticipated even just a short time ago. Financial well-being is deteriorating overall for most everyone, according to a recent report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The various negative financial factors, keeping up with the increased cost of living families are dipping into their savings accounts and running up credit card balances that are exponentially growing with the consistent rise in interest rates. "That leaves them more financially vulnerable in the event of an economic shock(2)." Just one emergency - medical expense, car repair, job loss, or the death of the main income earner can quickly snowball a family into financial distress.
Some 61% of Americans of all income brackets were living paycheck to paycheck as of July [2023],....That percentage is 2 points higher than a year ago...(3)
Many assume that the government will step in to provide a safety net, but unfortunately this help may take too long. To receive government assistance many must wait weeks or even months before any benefits become active, not to mention the mounds of paperwork and bureaucracy that can take up valuable time from a mom that has children and works – in this amount of time, waiting moms and their children, families may lose a job due to lack of transportation, go hungry, or lack of air conditioning can put children in dangerous physical and emotional situations unless there is a stop gap. This is where Friends of Annapolis Moms (FOAM) comes in, filling the voids of family necessities, like groceries, car repairs, until further assistance becomes available.
